The Plains Quilt is a one-of-a-kind twin sized quilt (70in x 90in).
Nine yards of fabric were hand dyed with natural dyes to make this piece. The fabric used is a soft Essex cotton/linen blend and 100% cotton that has been dyed with walnut, quebracho, cutch and iron to make a range of earthy neutrals, rose shades and greys.
The front and back of the quilt were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches making the diamond shapes throughout, was done by hand with cotton sashiko thread that was hand dyed with walnut to make light grey and quebracho to make a rose color. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine.
The binding is a mix of earthy neutrals and greys and was also sewn by hand.
The quilt has 100% wool batting which makes it very warm and gives it a nice weight.
This quilt is functional but can also be displayed as a piece of art.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
It's best to display quilts away from direct sunlight. Some natural dyes are sensitive to sunlight which can cause fading.
Vacuuming the quilt with a stocking over the vacuum hose is an easy way to remove light dust.
For a deeper clean, professional cleaning is recommended.
For most quilts it is possible to clean by soaking in a tub and handwashing with care using a gentle detergent. Rinse and remove the excess water. Lay flat to dry out of direct sunlight. Hanging the quilt to dry will put strain on the stitches.
Please do not machine wash.
