Size - 51" x 51"

This quilt is made with Essex cotton/linen that has been hand dyed with cochineal. Cochineal is an insect found on prickly pear cactus. The color extracted from the insect can create a range of pinks, reds and purples by altering the pH of the dye. Cochineal dye is also used in food and cosmetics in addition to textiles.

Additionally a natural color cotton/linen was also used to create the star and background. The back of the quilt is an improvised mix of fabrics leftover from the front.

The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, is done by hand with madder root dyed cotton sashiko thread. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine. The quilt binding is made with stripes from all the colors used on the quilt and is also hand sewn. This lightweight quilt has 100% cotton batting. It is a functional piece that would be best suited as a wall hanging or an accent piece for furniture.

Care Instructions

It's best to display quilts away from direct sunlight. Some natural dyes are sensitive to sunlight which can cause fading.

Vacuuming the quilt with a stocking over the vacuum hose is an easy way to remove light dust.

For a deeper clean, professional cleaning is recommended.

For most quilts it is possible to clean by soaking in a tub and handwashing with care using a gentle detergent. Rinse and remove the excess water. Lay flat to dry out of direct sunlight. Hanging the quilt to dry will put strain on the stitches.

Please do not machine wash.
